About american art prints
American painting came of age in the second half of the nineteenth century, divided between artists who stayed and artists who left. At home, Winslow Homer (1836–1910) built an art of direct observation — the sea, hunters, rural life — largely self-taught and increasingly stark; George Inness developed an atmospheric, tonal landscape manner that turned the American countryside toward mood and memory.
Abroad, the expatriates made careers at the center of European art. James McNeill Whistler settled in London, pursuing an art of tonal harmony he likened to music; John Singer Sargent, born in Florence to American parents, became the leading portraitist of his age in Paris and London; and Mary Cassatt, established in Paris, was invited by Edgar Degas in 1879 to exhibit with the Impressionists — the only American to join their circle. Together they mark the moment American painters became full participants in the transatlantic art world.
