The term Post-Impressionism was coined retrospectively by the English critic Roger Fry for his 1910 London exhibition Manet and the Post-Impressionists. It gathers the painters who, from the 1880s, absorbed Impressionism’s bright palette and painterly freedom but turned it toward different ends: Paul Cézanne sought a more durable structure beneath appearances, studying the landscape of his native Provence; Vincent van Gogh made color and brushwork carry direct emotional force; Paul Gauguin rejected painting strictly from nature, seeking imaginative and symbolic subjects that led him to Brittany and, from 1891, to Tahiti.

Odilon Redon stood somewhat apart, developing a visionary art of dreams and floral fantasies aligned with Symbolism. What unites these artists is less a shared style than a shared inheritance — each began where Impressionism left off, and together they opened the paths that twentieth-century painting would follow.
