The Dutch Republic of the seventeenth century produced painting on an unprecedented scale, made for the open market rather than church or court. Painters specialized narrowly: Gerard ter Borch (1617–1681) perfected the quiet domestic interior, rendering the sheen of satin with a fidelity that became his signature; Meindert Hobbema (1638–1709), the pupil of Jacob van Ruisdael, painted sunlit woodland scenes and returned to the watermill motif more than thirty times — a subject his contemporaries could read as an emblem of human transience and Dutch industriousness.
After the Golden Age’s market collapsed in the late seventeenth century, Dutch painting’s next moment of world importance came two hundred years later with Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), who began among the dark peasant subjects of his native Brabant before the move to Paris and then Arles transformed his palette. The collection spans both poles of this tradition.
