About italian art prints
Italy’s painting tradition anchors the European canon. The works here span its long arc: devotional panels and altarpiece fragments from the Renaissance, when workshops in Florence, Siena, and Venice joined the revival of classical antiquity to new systems of perspective and anatomy, through the Baroque and into the eighteenth century, when Venetian painters brought a final brilliance to Italian art with luminous ceiling sketches, sacred scenes, and views.
By then Italy had also become Europe’s destination. The Grand Tour drew travelers across the Alps, and view painters supplied them with vedute — topographical portraits of Venice’s canals and Rome’s ruins — while foreign artists came to study the light and the monuments firsthand. The later works gathered here include such views of Italy by visiting painters, for whom the country was less a school than a subject: a landscape already saturated with art.
