Paul Cezanne was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839 and, apart from his years of study and struggle in Paris, remained rooted in the landscape of the Midi — the terrain recorded in The Bay of Marseille, Seen from L’Estaque (c. 1885). Encouraged by Camille Pissarro, alongside whom he painted at Pontoise and Auvers in the 1870s, he abandoned the dark palette of his early work for painting out of doors; late in life he had himself listed in an exhibition catalogue as “pupil of Pissarro.”

Cezanne’s mature method built form from patches of graded color rather than line and shadow, and freely bent perspective so that each object holds its own place in the picture. The Basket of Apples (c. 1893), with its tilted table and impossibly poised fruit, states the approach plainly; the late Bathers pursued it on the theme that occupied him to the end. His analytical treatment of nature made him a foundational figure for the Cubists and much of twentieth-century painting.
