Realism emerged in France in the aftermath of the Revolution of 1848, rejecting both academic history painting and Romantic exoticism in favor of the direct observation of contemporary life. Its leading figure, Gustave Courbet, caused a scandal at the Salon of 1850–51 by painting ordinary rural people — a village funeral, laborers breaking stones — at the monumental scale traditionally reserved for heroic subjects. “Painting,” he insisted, “can only consist in the representation of real and existing things.”

Jean-François Millet pursued a related course from the village of Barbizon, where he settled in 1849, monumentalizing the peasants of the surrounding fields in works whose honest depiction of rural labor struck many contemporaries as politically subversive. The Realists’ insistence on the dignity of everyday subjects, and their frank, unidealized handling of paint, laid the groundwork for Manet and the Impressionists who followed.
