Will Hicock Low (1853–1932) was born in Albany, New York, and trained in Paris from 1873, first under Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts and then with Carolus-Duran. His summers at Barbizon and Montigny-sur-Loing brought him under the influence of Jean-François Millet and into close friendship with Robert Louis Stevenson, later recorded in his memoir A Chronicle of Friendships.
Low’s reputation was made by the deluxe illustrated edition of John Keats’s Lamia he produced in 1885, regarded as a landmark of American book illustration; the five gouaches here, including Lamia and On This Side of Jove’s Clouds, belong to that project. Its success led the publisher to commission a companion volume of Keats’s odes and sonnets, and the two books earned Low a medal at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair. He later turned chiefly to mural painting, decorating the Waldorf Astoria and the New York State Education Building.
