Vincent van Gogh painted for only a decade, but the two years he spent in Paris from 1886 — where his brother Theo, an art dealer, introduced him to the Impressionists and to Japanese prints — turned the dark palette of his Dutch years into brilliant color and broken, rhythmic brushwork. The Self-Portrait and Terrace at the Moulin de Blute-Fin, Montmartre, both of 1887, record that transformation directly.

In February 1888 he moved south to Arles, hoping to found a studio of like-minded painters in his rented Yellow House. The Poet’s Garden (1888) depicts the public garden facing it, painted as Van Gogh awaited the arrival of Paul Gauguin, with whom he worked for nine turbulent weeks that autumn. The Bedroom, showing his own sleeping quarters in the house, exists in three versions; the second was painted in September 1889 at the asylum of Saint-Rémy, where Van Gogh also made the reed-pen drawings of cypresses and gardens that count among his finest works. He died at Auvers-sur-Oise in July 1890.
