Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and settled permanently in Paris in 1874, having trained privately with Jean-Léon Gérôme and copied extensively in the Louvre and in Spain — After the Bullfight (1873) dates from her Spanish period. In 1877 Edgar Degas invited her to exhibit with the Impressionists; she was the only American officially associated with the group, showing in four of their exhibitions between 1879 and 1886. Works such as On a Balcony (1878–79) belong to these first Impressionist years.
Like Degas, Cassatt was a draftsman above all, and an innovator in pastel, the medium of Mother’s Goodnight Kiss (1888) and Sleepy Nicolle. The theme of mothers and children, treated without sentimentality and informed after 1890 by Japanese prints, became her mature specialty, culminating in The Child’s Bath (1893).
