Born in Florence in 1856 to expatriate American parents, John Singer Sargent trained in Paris from 1874 in the atelier of Carolus-Duran, who directed his students toward the painterly example of Velázquez. His portrait of Madame X caused a scandal at the 1884 Salon, and by 1886 Sargent had moved to London, where he became the leading society portraitist of his generation. Parisian works such as Madame Paul Escudier (1882) and the Rehearsal of the Pasdeloup Orchestra at the Cirque d’Hiver (c. 1879) show the bravura handling that made his reputation.
Around 1907, wearied by portrait commissions, Sargent largely gave them up in favor of travel and watercolor, a medium in which he produced more than two thousand sheets. Working from Corfu to the Alps to the marble quarries of Carrara — subjects of Olive Trees, Corfu (1909) and Workmen at Carrara (1911) — he painted rapidly and for his own pleasure, with a fluency that made these late works a second, independent achievement.
