George Inness, born in Newburgh, New York, in 1825, began under the influence of the Hudson River School but soon departed from its panoramic exactitude. Study in Italy and exposure to the Barbizon painters in France drew him toward looser handling and quieter, inhabited landscapes — what he called “civilized landscapes” rather than wilderness. Equally formative was the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose doctrine that everything in nature corresponds to something spiritual shaped the art of his maturity.

After settling permanently in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1885 — the countryside of Harvest, Montclair (1884) — Inness perfected the late style for which he is best known: softened edges, saturated tone, and veiled atmospheres invented in the studio from memory, as in Autumn Woods (1891–94). He wintered in Tarpon Springs, Florida, whose tall pines inspired The Home of the Heron (1893), painted the year before his death. Often called a Tonalist, he stands apart in the spiritual conviction underlying his landscapes.
