Claude Monet was the initiator and most persistent advocate of Impressionism, committed for six decades to recording the transient effects of light and atmosphere. Born in Paris in 1840 and raised in Le Havre, he painted the harbors, cliffs, and beaches of the Normandy coast throughout his career — from the early Beach at Sainte-Adresse (1867) to repeated campaigns at Étretat and Pourville — as well as the modern city, as in Arrival of the Normandy Train, Gare Saint-Lazare (1877).

In 1883 Monet settled at Giverny, a hamlet on the Epte northwest of Paris, where his practice shifted decisively toward the series: repeated studies of a single motif under changing conditions, each canvas exchanged for another as the light moved. The Stacks of Wheat, painted in a field beside his property in 1890–91, were the first group conceived and exhibited this way; fifteen were shown together at Durand-Ruel in May 1891. Later series followed at London’s bridges, in Venice, and finally in his own water garden, subject of the late Water Lily Pond and Irises.
